With the Oscars being this weekend, I thought it’d be the perfect time for me to list my favorite movies of 2020. I really liked the films released this year. Honestly, I thought 2020 was one of the strongest years of movie releases in a good while. I really liked the intimate character studies the year brought us, and the documentaries were truly wonderful. Comedies, too, had an especially good year. Here’s my official ranking of my favorite films of the year that was:

  1. Minari

  2. Nomadland

  3. Driveways

  4. Boys State

  5. The Vast of Night

  6. The Father

  7. The Truffle Hunters

  8. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

  9. Dick Johnson is Dead

  10. The 40-Year-Old Version

In regards to additional honors, here’s how I’d vote:

Best Director: Chloe Zhang for Nomadland

Best Actress: Nicole Beharie for Miss Juneteenth

Best Actor: Brian Dennehy for Driveways & Anthony Hopkins for The Father

Best Supp. Actress: Youn Yuh-jung for Minari

Best Supp. Actor: Paul Raci for Sound of Metal

Best Original Screenplay: Minari

Best Adapted Screenplay: Nomadland

I’m always grateful for art that allows us to escape. I think movies were vital to the year that was. They brought me peace, joy, and topics for conversation.
