Quarantine Art-Viewing Guide

I posted this recommendation of some things in the art world to enjoy on my Facebook page recently, but wanted to share it for anyone who follows my blog but (wisely) doesn’t partake in social media:

I think art helps many of us when times are tough. I’ve been fortunate to find several things during quarantine that’ve affected me during the past couple of months. Just wanted to share my list for those who feel like they’ve watched, heard, or read it all and are searching for something else:

-NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts (I’ve watched the Mac Miller one at least two dozens times and am convinced his performance of “2009” is one of the best live recordings of recent memory. The session featuring Chance the Rapper is another one of my favorites. Maggie Rogers has a great set, too. And so does Summer Walker, Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Watkins Family Hour, Erykah Badu and many other folks. None of these are new to me, but there’s something about watching live performances during quarantine...)
-The miniseries Devs on Hulu
-Alexander Weinstein’s latest collection of stories, Universal Love
-The “Mouse of Silver” episode of The Midnight Gospel on Netflix
-Erykah Badu gets another mention with her Quarantine Concert Series
-Although the whole book is good, the stories “Parkway” and “Boomer” from Leah Hampton’s upcoming debut collection are superb, and speaking of debut collections, another one I enjoyed was Couri Johnson’s I’ll Tell You a Love Story from Bridge Eight Press
-The docuseries The Last Dance on ESPN (which still has a few episodes to go) and the documentary Honeyland on Hulu
-The Finding Fred podcast
-Grady Hendrix’s The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires and Kawai Strong Washburn’s Sharks in the Time of Saviors are two excellent new novels that are full of strangeness
-The new track “Hey April” from Frank Ocean and the sort-of-new one “The Dreamer” from Che Apalache

Looking forward to seeing what the art world gives us throughout the summer.
