My Morning Jacket in Huntsville

Mere and I made our first trip to Huntsville’s new Orion Amphitheater last night, and we know we’ll be back a lot over the coming years. The venue is a beautiful space. The sound was great. It’s a fantastic addition to the city.

As for the show, we saw My Morning Jacket—and Joy Oladokun, who opened. Joy’s set was nice. The artist’s laughter was fun, and I enjoyed hearing the stories behind some of the songs. Joy is similar to Tracy Chapman in ways. I’m sure it’s a common comparison.

As for My Morning Jacket, they are one of the bands I found in college and have been a fan since then. Mere says it’s her favorite of the shows she’s been to that I’ve picked. The energy was insane. I could feel the whole night. Truly, too. The music was phenomenal. It just enters through the soul or something—and it lingers. Goosebumps kind of stuff. My Morning Jacket is a band that MUST be heard live.

“One Big Holiday” was my favorite song, but “Steam Engine,” “Mahgeetah,” “Wordless Chorus,” and “Spring (Among the Living)” were very close. People lost their minds during “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream, Pt. 2.” Haha. For real, that song got the crowd very excited.

The only song I really missed was “Gideon.” I love that track, and I would’ve loved to have heard it. Oh well, the absence just gives me something to hope for the next time I see them…

Great first show at Orion for us.
